How to get to Uchisar

How do you get from Göreme to Uchisar Castle?

Take the Göreme-Uçhisar town bus from Göreme bus station: every 30 minutes, about 10 minutes, 70 TL. Or a taxi for around 250 TL, or an hour's uphill walk.

• Town bus. Göreme Belediyesi runs it from 07:00 to 19:30 every half hour, then at 20:30 and 22:30 (LocalisTR timetable). Pay 70 TL in cash to the driver; that was the fare in October 2026. Last bus back from Uçhisar: 22:00.
• Nevşehir-Avanos bus. The private Avanos line also stops at Göreme bus station and Uçhisar, about once an hour (roughly quarter past). Same ride, different livery.
• Taxi. About 4 km and 7 to 10 minutes. At the 2026 tariff of 45 TL plus 45 TL per km, that is about 250 TL on the meter.
• On foot. 3.3 km along the road (about 45 minutes uphill), or through Pigeon Valley, a nicer route but better walked the other way. See the Pigeon Valley walk.

Where does the bus drop you, and how far is it to the kiosk?

On the main road through Uçhisar, by the square below the castle. From there it is a 5-minute uphill walk through the village lanes to the kiosk.

Tell the driver "Uçhisar Kalesi" and you will be let off at the centre. The Ürgüp dolmuş stops at the market square (Pazar Alanı) in the centre. Follow the lanes uphill: the rock is visible from everywhere, and the kiosk sits at the foot of its steps. For the Pigeon Valley viewpoint, walk 10 to 15 minutes downhill towards the Göreme road.

Everything in the centre is on a slope. If you're carrying luggage to a cave hotel up near the castle, a taxi to the door saves a sweaty climb on cobbles.

Can you get to Uchisar from Nevşehir, Ürgüp or Avanos by bus?

Yes. The Nevşehir-Avanos bus passes through Uçhisar about hourly, and a dolmuş from Ürgüp runs a few times a day except Sunday.

Times below are first departures and frequencies from LocalisTR's timetables, valid for 2026 but subject to change. Pay the driver in cash and confirm your stop when you board.

With only three departures a day, the Ürgüp dolmuş is easy to miss. Otherwise a taxi covers the 12 to 14 km from Ürgüp in about 15 minutes, roughly 650 TL at the meter tariff.

How do you get from the airport to Uchisar?

Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV) is about 38 km and 40 minutes away; Kayseri (ASR) is about 80 km and 80 minutes. Neither has a public bus to Uçhisar, so take a shared shuttle, a pre-booked transfer or a taxi.

Shuttles meet scheduled flights and drop at hotels across Göreme, Uçhisar and Ürgüp, so book with your flight number. Taxi fares are estimates from Nevşehir's official 2026 tariff; airport drivers often quote a flat price instead.

How do you get to Uchisar from Istanbul?

Fly to Nevşehir or Kayseri (about 1 hour 20 minutes in the air), or take an overnight bus of 10.5 to 11.5 hours. With one day only, a fly-in day trip covers the castle.

By plane. Turkish Airlines flies Istanbul Airport to Nevşehir about 18 times a week as of October 2026, per FlightConnections; Kayseri has more flights from both Istanbul airports. Then the shuttle or a taxi, as above.

By bus. About 750 km. Buses leave Esenler bus station several times a day, many overnight, and take 10 hours 40 minutes at best (Rome2rio). Companies include Nevşehir Seyahat, Kapadokya VIP and FlixBus. Some drop you in Nevşehir and carry on to Göreme by a free minibus: check that your ticket says Göreme. From there, the town bus takes you up to Uçhisar.

In one day. The private day trip from Istanbul includes the flights, a guide, lunch, Kaymaklı underground city, Göreme Open Air Museum and a 20-minute Uchisar stop. It runs 16 to 18 hours and leaves no morning for a balloon; the listing requires an overnight stay for that.

Can you drive to Uchisar, and where do you park?

Yes. Uçhisar is 7 km east of Nevşehir on the road to Göreme. Park in the paid car park below the castle, reported at 50 to 70 TL per car in 2026.

Signs for Uçhisar and "Kale" lead off the Nevşehir-Göreme road into the village. Seyahat Dergisi listed parking at 70 TL per car in October 2026; earlier reports put it at about 50 TL. The lanes right under the rock are narrow and steep, and at sunset they jam. Park lower and walk the last few minutes.

Rental desks operate at both airports. A car makes sense if you want sunrise viewpoints, the underground cities and Ihlara on your own schedule. For Göreme and Uçhisar alone, the bus and the occasional taxi are cheaper and spare you the parking hunt.

Is a tour easier than getting there yourself?

For Uchisar alone, no: it is a 70 TL bus ride from Göreme. A tour earns its price when you add the sites that are hard to reach by bus.

Göreme Open Air Museum, Paşabağ, Zelve, Devrent and Avanos are spread across the valleys north of Göreme, on back roads with patchy bus service. Linking them by taxi in one day costs more than a shared red tour, and you'd have no guide. Every red tour on this site includes hotel pickup, and one starts in Uçhisar itself.

Our advice: if you stay in Göreme, visit the castle on your own, ideally with the Pigeon Valley walk, and save the tour for the outlying sites.
